JM: How many meals did you get per day? Charlie: 3. Don: 3 Pierce: 3 meals a day. Breakfast was served at like 5 or
6. Lunch was always a warm meal like a dinner
and dinner was always cold like lunch.
JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why. Charlie: Reasonable, for institutional food. The jailers
and other staff regularly eat the same meals that
the inmates get while on duty. It will keep you
alive but it will also make you fat. The trustees
prepare all meals, supervised by civilian personnel.
Don: 1 Pierce: I would rate it a 2 out of 5 now that I am free
but it was a 4 out of 5 while I was locked up.
When you are hungry and depend on each meal to
fill you up the best as possible. You learn to
like the food that they feed you because even
though you eat three times a day. You still are
hungry and those hunger pains are no joke.
JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals? Charlie: The civilian kitchen supervisor likes to sometimes
serve breakfast items at supper. Cold meals such
as sandwiches are never popular, while pancakes
usually are. Don: no Pierce: I loved sausage on shingle (SOS) and there was
some kind of shepards type of pie I liked as
well.
JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it? Charlie: Yes. Inmates can purchase snack items on
commissary if they have money on their books. Don: no Pierce: Commissary offered snickers and other chocalates.
