JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications? Charlie: Usually. However, frequent medication errors were
made by the jail nurse while I was there. Inmates
are cautioned to carefully confirm that they were
actually getting the medications in the amount and
dosage they were prescribed. Don: yes Pierce: No! you had to request them and sometimes you
would get them and some times you wouldn't.
JM: How did you get your medications? Charlie: The jail nurse and/or a jailer brings medications
to each tank twice a day. Inmates can also request
sick call in the medical bay. Inmates can
purchase OTC meds such as Tylenol from the
medication cart as it passes by. They do not have
to have money on their books to purchase these,
but a record is kept of what meds inmates
purchased and their books are charged for these meds. Don: pay for them Pierce: I got a few teeth pulled so I was able to get
advil every so often to mild the pain. They
moniter your usage. There was I guy I remember
who's finger got chopped off and he used to cry
and scream all night that he was in pain.
JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this? Charlie: The jail nurse or the jailers crush the pills in a
cup and watch you take and swallow them. Inmates
can also be “written up” (receive in-house
disciplinary action) for hoarding meds. Don: charges filed Pierce: Don't know anyone who had drug issues or abused
them.
